Donald Trump and Elon Musk are unjustly firing thousands of federal employees who make the Endangered Species Act and Marine Mammal Protection Act work. They have also frozen funding for nonprofit organizations that partner with the agencies to conserve wildlife.

In addition, they are devising new policies to undo vital species protections. And, leaders in Congress are seeking to rewrite wildlife laws to favor wealthy industry bosses.

The damage is already being done to wildlife and the people who work to protect them. We’ve heard stories of endangered species recovery efforts being stalled and outright stopped. When species are on the brink, delay often means doom.

But our community has power if we speak with one voice. Now is the time for collective action to turn up the heat. Congress needs to be the check on executive power that they’re supposed to be.

This iconic and vital species, native to the rivers and streams of the Appalachian region, is facing imminent threats to its survival. These salamanders breathe through their skin and require clean, cold water to breathe in. Unfortunately, the waters they call home are being degraded by mining, logging, and other human activities.

The Eastern Hellbender is a large aquatic salamander that serves as a vital indicator of freshwater ecosystem health. These unique creatures help maintain water quality by feeding on aquatic insects and other small organisms. Sadly, Eastern Hellbenders have seen a dramatic population decline due to habitat destruction, water pollution, and disease. Their habitat—clear, fast-flowing rivers and streams—has been severely compromised by mining, logging, agricultural runoff, and urban development. As a result, the species has been lost from nearly 60% of its historical range, and remaining populations are fragmented and at risk of further decline.

Despite its ecological importance, the Eastern Hellbender is not protected under the Endangered Species Act, leaving it vulnerable to further harm. Studies show that populations in several states are in steep decline. If we do not act, the Eastern Hellbender could be lost dealing a tragic blow to biodiversity and ecosystem health in the Appalachian region.

Please submit a public comment today asking the USFWS to protect the future of the Eastern Hellbender by listing it as Endangered under the Endangered Species Act.

Witnessing the iconic migration of vivid black and orange patterned monarch butterflies is an experience that stands out for many people as a powerful representation of the wonder and persistence of natural systems. But with declines of more than 56-74 % in the eastern monarch populations and up to 99% of the western population lost, monarch butterflies are in serious trouble. It is estimated that, without protections and recovery actions, there is a high probability that monarchs will be extinct within 60 years.

Right now, you have the opportunity to call for the protection of monarchs. The public comment period for monarchs to be listed as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act is currently open, and will remain open for comment through March 12th 2025. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service proposed listing will enhance efforts to restore and protect this iconic pollinator.

Please send your comment in support of listing the monarch as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. Our sample comment, below, will help you write your personalized comment. The Endangered Species Act is one of our most successful conservation laws, with 99% of listed species avoiding extinction. Your input will help to secure vital federal protection for monarch populations and their habitats.

Proposed Monarch Listing as a Threatened Species on 12/12/2024 in the Federal Register

The U.S. Senate recently voted to confirm Doug Burgum as the next Secretary of the Department of the Interior. Governor Burgum’s track record in North Dakota has demonstrated a clear allegiance to the fossil fuel industry at the expense of environmental protection. His policies have consistently undermined climate progress, promoted unchecked oil and gas expansion, and ignored the need for meaningful conservation efforts. Entrusting him with the stewardship of our endangered and threatened species and public lands poses a serious threat to these species and places.

Please send your senators an email either thanking them for opposing Doug Burgum’s confirmation as Interior Secretary or telling them you expect them to do better.

Two bills in Congress could strip wolves of Endangered Species Act protections and open the door to unsustainable hunting and trapping.

A bill from Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) would strip wolves in Wisconsin and other Great Lakes states of protections and could lead to another gruesome hunt like the 2021 hunt that led to more than 200 wolves being slaughtered in just days.

Representative Lauren Boebert (R-CO) put forth legislation that would reinstate a Trump-era policy which would kick wolves off of the endangered species list from coast-to-coast and allow states to set hunting and trapping seasons. It would even prevent courts from reviewing the action.

We can prevent future pandemics by preventing human activities that can result in the transmission of disease between wildlife and people.

The “Preventing Future Pandemics Act of 2020” prohibits the import, export, and sale of live wildlife for the purpose of human consumption as food or medicine and closes all live wildlife markets for that purpose in the United States. This bipartisan bill is a crucial step toward drastically reducing the risk of a future zoonotic disease outbreak like COVID-19, which resulted from our exploitation of wildlife.
