RSGA members graze private livestock on the public lands within the Checkerboard and wild horses are competition for cheap forage available through tax-subsidized grazing fees<\/span><span class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">.<\/span><\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div class=\"\" style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\"><span class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">\u201cThe decision threatens to undermine federal protections for wild horses across the West by setting a dangerous precedent for private landowners to dictate whether federally protected wild horses will be allowed to live in their designated habitats on public lands,\u201d <\/span><span class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; font-weight: bold; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">said William S. In places that are popular destinations for wild horse tourism, every single wild horse would be removed.\u00a0<\/span><\/div><\/li><li class=\"\" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"list-style-type: disc; font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre;\" aria-level=\"1\"><div class=\"\" style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\"><span class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">Slashing the size of the Adobe Town HMA by approximately half and reducing the wild horse population to well below the 1,338 wild horses that the BLM previously determined to be at a \u201cthriving natural ecological balance\u201d with other uses of the land.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/div><\/li><li dir=\"ltr\" aria-level=\"1\">\u00a0<\/li><\/ul><div class=\"\" style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\"><span class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">The final amendments would preserve the White Mountain HMA as habitat for wild horses.<\/span><\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div class=\"\" style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\"><span class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">The BLM dropped its plan to convert that population to a non-reproducing herd via surgical <\/span><span class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">sterilization after local officials objected, citing negative impacts on this important <\/span><span class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">ecotourism resource in the area. <\/span><\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div class=\"\" style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\"><span class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">\u201cOur lawsuit challenges the BLM\u2019s decision to elevate the private interests of the livestock industry over the public interest in protecting wild horses and the public lands where they live,\u201d <\/span><span class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; font-weight: bold; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">said Suzanne Roy, executive director for the AWHC.<\/span><\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div class=\"\" style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\"><p><span class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">\u201cThis a clear and present danger, not only to wild horses, but also to the larger fight to protect our western public lands from destruction caused by extractive industries. It\u2019s a troubling decision by an administration that has claimed conservation of public lands as a priority.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><\/div><div class=\"\" style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\"><span class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #222222; background-color: #ffffff; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">Conservationists proposed a number of alternatives that would improve ecological conditions, including reducing livestock numbers, reintroducing wild bison, and resolving Checkerboard public land patterns through land swaps or, if necessary, eminent domain. Checkerboard land ownership patterns, where public lands are interspersed with private parcels like the ones the RSGA owns in the Red Desert, have also been causing <\/span><a class=\"\" style=\"text-decoration: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wyomingpublicmedia.org\/open-spaces\/2022-09-23\/corner-crossing-lawsuit-is-the-latest-fight-over-mountain-west-land-access\"><span class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #1155cc; background-color: #ffffff; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-position: normal; text-decoration: underline; text-decoration-skip-ink: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">major public access issues<\/span><\/a><span class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #222222; background-color: #ffffff; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\"> elsewhere. The agency failed to give any of these reasonable alternatives the detailed consideration they are due under the law.\u00a0<\/span><\/div><p class=\"\" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 12pt; margin-bottom: 12pt;\"><span class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #222222; background-color: #ffffff; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">&#8220;Because of Checkerboard land ownership, the Rock Springs Grazing Association has been able to dictate land management and block<\/span> <span class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #222222; background-color: #ffffff; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">conservation initiatives in the Red Desert for far too long, to the detriment of wildlife and healthy public lands,&#8221;<\/span><span class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #222222; background-color: #ffffff; font-weight: bold; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\"> said Erik Molvar, a wildlife biologist and executive director of the conservation group Western Watersheds Project. <\/span><span class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #222222; background-color: #ffffff; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">&#8220;This wild horse plan amendment is one more example of how the livestock industry uses the Checkerboard to force its agenda regarding public lands and wildlife to maximize their private gain, to the detriment of the public interest. Enough is enough.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><p class=\"\" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 12pt; margin-bottom: 12pt;\"><span class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">\u201cWhen the Bureau of Land Management conducted the largest roundup in U.S. history in 2021 and 2022, removing over 3,500 horses from the Wyoming Checkerboard region, it was clear the agency was setting the stage to permanently wipe out many of the state&#8217;s most cherished herds,\u201d <\/span><span class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; font-weight: bold; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">said Dr. Joanna Grossman, equine program director and senior advisor for the Animal Welfare Institute<\/span><span class=\"\" style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">. \u201cThis extreme plan sets a dangerous precedent for all wild horses across the West who, under the law, are supposed to be protected by our government.
