{"id":742,"date":"2009-09-24T16:52:00","date_gmt":"2009-09-24T20:52:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/endangered.org\/fish-and-wildlife-service-announces-climate-change-strategy\/"},"modified":"2009-09-24T16:52:00","modified_gmt":"2009-09-24T20:52:00","slug":"fish-and-wildlife-service-announces-climate-change-strategy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.endangered.org\/fish-and-wildlife-service-announces-climate-change-strategy\/","title":{"rendered":"Fish and Wildlife Service Announces Climate Change Strategy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Mitch Merry<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service released their proposed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fws.gov\/home\/climatechange\/\">Climate Change Strategy<\/a> marking a positive first step in protecting species from the threats caused by a warming world. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fws.gov\/news\/NewsReleases\/showNews.cfm?newsId=E79B541B-E2B2-1661-CE45BAD69C7597F7\">Service says<\/a> that the plan will \u201chelp guide the Fish and Wildlife Service\u2019s response to impacts such as changing wildlife migration patterns, the spread of invasive species, changing precipitation patterns and rising sea levels.\u201d  It is a strong recognition by the administration of the scientific concensus that human activity is changing the climate system and that the effects on plants, fish and wildlife will be drastic if left  unchecked.<\/p>\n<p>The framework for the pioneering plan has 3 elements:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>Adaptation<\/span>&#8211; Limiting the effects of warming on species through habitat restoration and similar projects.<\/li>\n<li><span>Mitigation<\/span>&#8211; Reducing CO2 levels in the atmosphere to limit the rate at which warming occurs.<\/li>\n<li><span>Engagement<\/span>-Greater public and private involvement worldwide in seeking solutions to help wildlife cope with climate change.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While the plan is a laudable launching point for dealing with climate change, it is the first in what needs to be multiple steps. The plan is based in part on legislation currently pending before Congress. The legislation, the <a href=\"https:\/\/thomas.loc.gov\/cgi-bin\/query\/z?c111:H.R.2454:\">American Clean Energy and Security Act<\/a>, must be  passed soon and with robust  funding for wildlife adaptation.
